A couple goes camping in the wild to study a mushroom epidemic. Their rural escapade is disrupted and they find refuge with an old farmer and her vintage cartoon-addicted son stuck in a quasi-vegetative state.
Devereux Milburn, prolific author of a dozen short films, signs a horrific first feature with remarkable aesthetic ambitions. Convoluted composition, yellowish picture and tormented soundtrack serve a story inspired by a news item from the 1950s: the mass poisoning of the small French village of Pont-Saint-Esprit, where hundreds of people were infected by gangrene and suffered hallucinations following the ingestion of mushrooms that had contaminated their wheat flour. Milburn’s deliciously twisted tale is a jubilant, mesmerizing debut.
